Explore Two-Variable Relationships and Scatter Plots
The other day, Jon Orr (@mrorr_geek) sent me a tweet involving some sort of pumpkin bomb:
PumpkinBomb test run http://t.co/Vjn7BqSVTg here's the activity http://t.co/d2unoGUdjz @MathletePearce @mraspinall @mr_stadel @HeatherCurl

Jon saw Jimmy Fallon do the experiment on TV and saw math class written all over it.
At first, it looked cool, but I wasn’t sure how I was going to do this activity and connect it to any real learning goal. However, since then, Jon and other people from the MathTwitterBlogosphere (#MTbos) have put together a pretty cool task that will connect math classrooms from around the globe to collaborate by collecting Pumpkin Time-Bomb Data.
Jon has chunked this activity into Dan Meyer’s 3 Act Math format and even created a Google Form that will collect data from people around the globe trying the experiment and has shared the data in a Google Spreadsheet.
The form will collect the following details about your pumpkin:
- Diameter of Pumpkin
- Thickness of Pumpkin (measured after it breaks)
- Circumference of Pumpkin
- Height of Pumpkin
- Number of Rubber Bands to Break It
- Rubber Band Measurements

Results From My Class and Others:
Here’s how it went in my classroom today:
When our second pumpkin didn’t explode by the end of the period, we passed it off to Mrs. Gardin’s period 2 MPM1D Grade 9 Academic class and they added some more elastics until the pumpkin couldn’t take any more:
And how about the relationships?
